THE BENEFACTOR

 

The Benefactor is a project about success and hunger. It is a lecture performance on gifts, investments, parasitism and the state of the arts, developed and performed by Julian Hetzel.

 

"First of all, I support this new cabinet. But - I disagree with them on one point: we should not cut funding to the arts. We should raise it. And I'd like to talk about my memories of music and culture from my youth. But first, I think that we can pay for culture by cutting back on development aid!" Frits Bolkestein

 

Inspired by the statement of Dutch politician Frits Bolkestein, referring to the current political situation in the field of art and culture in The Netherlands, Julian Hetzel developed a project about the radical alternative use of cultural money - by donating his budget to a starving child in Africa. He donated 2000 Euros into a child-sponsorship, 1 Euro per day. He frames this child-sponsorship as a piece of art, as a "durational intercontinental performance of 2000 days". In doing so, he raises questions about the ethics of success in society. But in fact he is first and foremost investing into his own future success... Art is created out of circumstances and not by pure inspiration.

LE BIENFAITEUR

 

Le bienfaiteur est un projet qui traite du succès et du désir. C'est une présentation de cadeaux, investissements, parasitisme et l'état des arts, réalisée et interprétée par  Julian Hetzel.

 

« Tout d'abord je soutiens ce nouveau cabinet. Mais je ne suis pas d'accord avec eux dans un point : On ne devrait pas réduire les fonds des arts. On doit les lever. Et j'aimerai parler des mes souvenirs de musique et culture de mon enfance. Mais d'abord, je pense qu'on peut payer pour la culture en diminuant l'aide de développement ! » Frits Bolkestein

Inspiré par la déclaration du politicien néerlandais Frits Bolkestein, qui se réfère à l'actuelle situation politique dans les domaines de l'art et la culture au Pays-Bas, Julian Hetzel a réalisé un projet dont il propose une alternative pour l'usage de l'argent culturel - et ce en donnant son argent à un enfant crevant de faim. Il a fait un don de 2000Euros à un parrainage d'enfant, un Euro par jour. Il considère ce parrainage comme  « art intercontinental » persistant 2000 jours. Cela soulève des questions sur des principes étiques du succès dans la société. Mais en fait il investi avant tout dans son propre avenir... L'art est fait de circonstances et pas seulement d'une pure inspiration.

Bei dem Projekt "The Benefactor" geht es um Erfolg und Hunger. Es ist ein Vortrag von Julian Hetzel über Geschenke, Investitionen, Parasitismus und den Zustand der Kunst im Allgemeinen.

"Zuerst unterstütze ich dieses neue Kabinett. Aber in einem Punkt stimme ich nicht zu: Wir sollten die Finanzierung von Kunst nicht senken, sondern erhöhen. ? Aber zuerst, denke ich, wir können nur wir für Kunst zahlen, in dem wir die Investitionen in die Entwicklungshilfe kürzen!" Frits Bolkestein

Inspiriert von den Aussagen des niederländischen Politikers Frits Bolkestein über die aktuelle Situation des Kunst- und Kultursektors in den Niederlanden, entwickelte Julian Hetzel ein Projekt, bei dem das an den Kultursektor gebundene Geld auf radikale Weise anders investiert wird - nämlich in dem man es an ein hungerndes Kind in Afrika spendet. Er selbst spendete 2000Euro seines "Kunst-Budgets" (ein Geschenk des Ministeriums für Erziehung, Kultur und Wissenschaft) an eine Kinderpatenschaft ? ein Euro pro Tag. Diese Unterstützung sieht er als ein eigenes Kunstwerk an, im Sinne einer "2000 Tage lang andauerenden, interkontinentalen Perfomance". Er bezeichnet sein Patenkind als sein Darsteller / Performer. Dabei stellt er Fragen zu den ethischen Grundsätzen von Erfolg in der Gesellschaft. Aber in Wirklichkeit geht es ihm vor allem darum, in seine eigene Zukunft zu investieren... Kunst entsteht aus bestimmten Umständen und nicht nur aus der puren Inspiration.

2. I study art because: I'm looking for new forms of expression and for significant collision.

 

3. After my studies I will be: A Master of Theater. A bit more experienced. Another free artist.Art is made out of circumstances and not only out of pure inspiration. With my current project, "The Benefactor", I'm working on the interconnection of art and life. The project is based on the notion of success, hunger and a statement about the budget cuts in arts and culture in The Netherlands. It is an examination of the ethics of success within society. So, I'm raising questions like: how to turn art into development aid? How to turn development aid into art? How to develop art? How to turn?

 

5. I also work on these themes: parasitism, interference, repetition, limits of control, fear ?

10. My preferred unrealized project: Currently: The translation / actualization of "Bondai Beach", (a participatory screen slide installation by Beat Streuli), into "Lampedusa Beach"...

2. J'étudie l'art parce que: Je cherche des nouvelles formes d'expression et une collision significative.

3. Après mes études je serais: Master en théâtre. Un autre artiste. L'art est fait de circonstances et pas seulement d'une pure inspiration. Mon projet actuel « Le bienfaiteur » traite d'un croisement de l'art et de la vie. Le projet est basé d'une idée du succès, du désir et est une déclaration sur les réductions de budget en art et culture aux Pays-Bas. C'est une enquête des principes étiques du succès dans la société. C'est pour cela, que je soulève des questions : Comment transformer l'art en aide de développement ? Comment transformer l'aide de développement en art ? Comment développer l'art ? Comment créer cette transformation ?

3. Nach dem Studium werde ich: Ein "Master of Arts" sein. Ein bisschen erfahrener. Ein weiterer freier Künstler. Kunst entsteht aus bestimmten Umständen und nicht nur aus der puren Inspiration. Mein aktuelles Projekt "Der Wohltäter" ist eine Verbindung der Kunst mit dem Leben. Das Projekt beruht auf der Vorstellung von Erfolg, Verlangen und ist eine Stellungnahme zu den Budget-Kürzungen im Bereich der Kunst und Kultur in den Niederlanden. Es ist eine Untersuchung der ethischen Grundsätze von Erfolg in der Gesellschaft. Deshalb stelle ich mir Fragen wie diese: Wie wandelt man Kunst in Entwicklungshilfe um? Wie wird Entwicklungshilfe zu Kunst? Wie entsteht Kunst? Wie schafft man die Wende?
